Bournemouth Air Festival 2009 – How to get involved – August 20th – 23rd 2009

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

Alex Carter is the Managing Director of Wilts & Dorset and is the title sponsor of this year’s Festival, “I am thrilled and privileged to once again be backing the biggest free event of its kind in the UK.
With over 750,000 visitors in 2008 we were overwhelmed with the results and I know we will be again this year.  The Air Festival raised our business profile both locally and regionally, further strengthening the image and reputation of our ‘More’ brand.  What can do to get involved and how you can do it? There are plenty of corporate support opportunities, including:

  • Sponsor aircraft appearances and the evening entertainment
  • Reward employees or clients with Festival Hospitality
  • Offer company services at a discounted rate to help support Air Festival organisers.

How?
As individuals, partnerships or business consortia you can back the aircraft and sponsor key Festival elements.  Why not try a host of grass roots communications, marketing and promotional activity?
Easy promotional methods will have a huge impact on spreading the Air Festival word and
include:

  • Word of mouth – friends, family, employees and colleagues
  • E-marketing – download the logo (below) or add a link to websites, tell subscribers to your enewsletters
  • Printed material – leaflets and posters are a great way to let people know what is happening
  • Decoration – decorate your premises, local business or shop front with an Air Festival theme.

Even easier, you could…

  • Tell your staff about the Air Festival Volunteer to help on the day
  • Have bournemouthair.co.uk as your home page
  • Upload the latest press release for your website visitors.

Where have the Empressarios gone ?

Friday, August 29th, 2008

Where have The Empressarios gone ? Last seen together 2 months ago, rumour is now rife that they have gone underground to complete work on a new and exciting project. Lets hope it sees the light of day soon. Hazel and Jo if you read this let us know what’s brewing.

The New Pier Age

The Empressarios are creative and charismatic duo, Johanna Lawrence and Hazel Evans. Who bring their united talents and enthusiasm into all that they undertake. Working unusually on pieces simultaneously to create mesmerisingly beautiful outpourings.

“Originality for us, is going as far as we possibly can – then taking another step, together.”

The picture shows the duo enjoying ice creams on the newly refurbished Boscombe Pier which was also the subject of one of their most attention grabbing pieces of art spread across four canvases and recently sold for a considerable sum to an overseas buyer.

(A short documentary showing a day in the life of two Bournemouth (UK) based artists who work under the banner of The Empressarios. Watch their crazy antics as they prepare for a live show where they combine art and poetry in a fresh artistic collaboration).

The documentary is the work of Director Jasmine Hetherington Wilkes. Jasmine is a documentary and drama director working in Bournemouth, UK.

Boscombe Surf Reef Big Sandcastle

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

A huge quantity of sand has been dumped to form what locals have dubbed The Boscombe Surf Reef Big Sandcastle. Visitors to Bournemouth Air Festival will be able to see it to the East of Boscombe Pier.Boscombe Surf Reef Big Sandcastle

The sand is being filtered in preparation to be pumped into the reef bags at high pressure through a 300 metre flexible tube.

The transfer of sand from Boscombe beach out to the reef section will take place when the reef sections are bolted together. There will be 55 bags in total, each will take up to 4 hours to fill.Boscombe Surf Reef Sancastle Excavation

Earlier in the month cranes folded the first section of the reef, measuring approx 50m by 40m. This section makes up one fifth of the total reef volume and will be delivered by barge when appropriate weather conditions prevail.

More Information, videos and updates on the surf reef construction can be found at www.bournemouth.co.uk

Bournemouth Air festival takes place on August 28, 29, 30, 31 with the flying displays between Boscombe Pier and Bournemouth Pier.

UPDATE: Vulcan Bomber XH558 Cancelled for Bournemouth Air Festival Saturday 30 August 2008

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

UPDATE: As quoted on the TVOC site

Media Information For Immediate Use
29th August 2008

Statement from the Vulcan to the Sky Trust

With great regret, the Vulcan to the Sky Trust (VTST) has to announce that the long-awaited appearance of Vulcan XH558 at the Bournemouth and Shoreham Airshows over the weekend of 30th and 31st August will not now be possible.

Avro Vulcan

VTST were very much looking forward to bringing Vulcan XH558 to the South Coast, and remain fully aware of the huge public interest that has been created by the much anticipated return of the aircraft to these displays.

After her last flight on Friday 22nd August, it was discovered that XH558 had suffered a failure of the retraction mechanism for one of her landing gear doors, grounding the aircraft. Whilst the repair was relatively simple, unfortunately due to circumstances beyond VTST’s control, the technicians from Marshall Aerospace, XH558’s Engineering Authority, who are required to inspect and certify the repair are not available until Monday.

Robert Pleming, Chief Executive of the Vulcan to the Sky Trust said “Our policy that safety is paramount dictates that we must do everything by the book. We must adhere absolutely to the processes and procedures which ensure that XH558 will be safe when she flies. Both the Trust and Marshall Aerospace are extremely sad that despite every effort, the Vulcan is unable to appear at Bournemouth and Shoreham. This is a huge disappointment for us, but more so for all of those who were looking forward to seeing XH558 this weekend.”

For more information please call 0116 2478145 (VTST) or 01223 373737 (Marshall Aerospace).

Jon Weaver the Air Festival Director said: “Securing the Vulcan is a great achievement for the town and the Festival; we are delighted to have this fantastic aircraft in the display line-up. In addition to the Red Arrows’ three-day appearance and the impressive list of aircraft coming to the resort, the Festival promises to be a historical event for the town”. Boscombe Surf Reef

Friday, July 4th, 2008

Several readers who know that I live in the Bournemouth area have asked for an update on the Boscombe Surf Reef project. For those of you who haven’t already heard. The Boscombe sea front is going to be transformed as part of the spa deveopment and have an artificial surf reef constructed by the side of the newly refurbished Boscombe pier.

The scheme was granted a special environmental licence by the Marine and Fisheries Agency on the 13th December 2007. Construction of the surf reef is on course to start on site Summer 2008. And subject to a good weather window, the reef is due to be finished by the end of October 2008 in time for the surfing season.

As previously mentioned Boscombe Pier has been refurbished and re-opened, and offers uncluttered views of the bay . The grade II listed entrance building will feature a high quality cafe and beach goods shop which will open in time for Easter 2009. Currently temporary catering facilities are in place for the summer season

The derelict building on the promenade opposite the surf reef is being transformed with the help of award winning designers Wayne and Gerardine Hemingway MBE of Hemingway Design. The building will feature up-market (expensive ?) beach huts. The Overstrand development will also include a surf-themed shop, surf school and restaurant. The current plans also include changingrooms, showers and takeaway food facilities.

The area in front of the pier is being relandscaped to include a large piece of public art and a pedestrianised meeting area.

How to get there:

Park all day in Hawkwood Road car park, Boscombe, for only £4 per car and travel FREE to the beach at Boscombe Pier. Take advantage of:
