HOW TO GET INVOLVED

Alex Carter is the Managing Director of Wilts & Dorset and is the title sponsor of this year’s Festival, “I am thrilled and privileged to once again be backing the biggest free event of its kind in the UK.
With over 750,000 visitors in 2008 we were overwhelmed with the results and I know we will be again this year.  The Air Festival raised our business profile both locally and regionally, further strengthening the image and reputation of our ‘More’ brand.  What can do to get involved and how you can do it? There are plenty of corporate support opportunities, including:

• Sponsor aircraft appearances and the evening entertainment

A huge quantity of sand has been dumped to form what locals have dubbed The Boscombe Surf Reef Big Sandcastle. Visitors to Bournemouth Air Festival will be able to see it to the East of Boscombe Pier.

The sand is being filtered in preparation to be pumped into the reef bags at high pressure through a 300 metre flexible tube.

The transfer of sand from Boscombe beach out to the reef section will take place when the reef sections are bolted together. There will be 55 bags in total, each will take up to 4 hours to fill.

Earlier in the month cranes folded the first section of the reef, measuring approx 50m by 40m. This section makes up one fifth of the total reef volume and will be delivered by barge when appropriate weather conditions prevail.

Statement from the Vulcan to the Sky Trust

With great regret, the Vulcan to the Sky Trust (VTST) has to announce that the long-awaited appearance of Vulcan XH558 at the Bournemouth and Shoreham Airshows over the weekend of 30th and 31st August will not now be possible.

VTST were very much looking forward to bringing Vulcan XH558 to the South Coast, and remain fully aware of the huge public interest that has been created by the much anticipated return of the aircraft to these displays.

After her last flight on Friday 22nd August, it was discovered that XH558 had suffered a failure of the retraction mechanism for one of her landing gear doors, grounding the aircraft. Whilst the repair was relatively simple, unfortunately due to circumstances beyond VTST’s control, the technicians from Marshall Aerospace, XH558’s Engineering Authority, who are required to inspect and certify the repair are not available until Monday.

Robert Pleming, Chief Executive of the Vulcan to the Sky Trust said “Our policy that safety is paramount dictates that we must do everything by the book. We must adhere absolutely to the processes and procedures which ensure that XH558 will be safe when she flies. Both the Trust and Marshall Aerospace are extremely sad that despite every effort, the Vulcan is unable to appear at Bournemouth and Shoreham. This is a huge disappointment for us, but more so for all of those who were looking forward to seeing XH558 this weekend.”

ORIGINAL POST: The Vulcan Bomber XH558 has been confirmed as definitely displaying at the Bournemouth Air Festival on Saturday 30th August 2008. The display will take place between Bournemouth Pier and Boscombe Pier.

The hard work of the restoring the Vulcan to flight worthiness by the Sky Trust, has cost 6 million UK Pounds, including 2.7 million UK Pounds allocated by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The reainder has come from public donations, from more than 20,000 people worldwide, making Vulcan XH558 a peoples project.

The Bournemouth Air Festival is due to take place on the 28th – 31st August along Bournemouth Seafront

The planned line-up includes three visits from the Red Arrows (Friday 3pm, Saturday 12 noon and Sunday 3pm), accompanied by an original Folland Gnat jet, the return of the Sea Vixen, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, Royal Navy Black Cats Helicopter Display Team, Team Guinot Wing Walkers, Hunter, Mustang, Yakovlevs, Vampire and much more!

This promises to be a fantastic FREE 4-day event, for all the family.

Ground based activities will be taking place between Bournemouth and Boscombe Piers, including demonstrations, crafts, various stalls and interactive activities. The RAF and Army will also be entertaining the crowds with mock-up cockpits, assault courses, tanks and a static helicopter display. On the sea there will be boat trips to the Royal Navy’s RFA Mounts Bay, which will be stationed in the bay. Additionally war veterans from locally based organisations will be sharing their stories with the crowds.

In the evenings live music, a funfair (located near Boscombe Pier), and other entertainment will climax with a spectacular firework display on Saturday night.

As if that wasn’t enough to look at the town will be lit up by a magical balloon glow as hot air balloons take off from the seafront, float over the skies and land in the Lower Gardens, where they will light up the night’s sky.

Bournemouth town centre will continue the celebrations into the late evening including a music marquee and stage.

Disabled Parking for Bournemouth Air Festival :Limited pay and display disabled parking for blue badge holders only will be available at Boscombe Overstrand car park next to Boscombe Pier. There will also be a pay and display viewing area at the car park where Manor Road meets East Overcliff Drive. Please note that East Overcliff Drive is closed throughout the event so follow the AA signs to this car park. You will need to show your blue badge to the Marshall to access this.
