Important information for Oktoberfest 2008 and dates for Oktoberfest 2009, 2010, 2011

This year the Oktoberfest 2008 takes place between 20th September and 5th October 2008.  The official opening is at 12.00pm by the mayor of Munich.  He will tap the first keg.  Once this first barrel is tapped visitors can start drinking, visitors often arrive as early as 9am on the first day.

For the rest of the beer festival, serving hours are 10:00 am to 10:30pm weekdays and 09:00am to 10:30am Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.  The tents close daily at 11:30pm.  The exception is the  “Käfer Wiesn-Schänke” and the “Weinzelt” which remain open until 01:00am”

If you are too late this year think ahead for 2009, 2010, 2011

2009: September 19 – October 4
2010: September 18 – October 3
2011: September 17 – October 3

Children under the age of six must leave the tents at 8pm even if they are in the company of their parents.

The first Oktoberfest was held in the year 1810 in honor of the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig’s marriage to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen.

The dates have moved forward to September to try to get better weather visitors are able to enjoy the gardens outside the tents and the stroll over “die Wiesen” or the fields much longer without feeling chilly.

The beer price will range between 7.80 and 8.30 Euros per liter – varying in every beer tent. (Previous year: 7.30 to 7.90 Euros)
